2021 Toyota Camry problems owners report most
2021 Toyota Camry problems are documented in public: owners have filed 157 complaints with NHTSA, the earliest in 2021 and the most recent in 2026. Sorting those by the component the filer named puts the airbags clearly first, at 78 of the 157 complaints, close to half of everything filed.
A complaint is not a repair bill and not a defect finding. It is one owner telling the regulator something went wrong. What makes the count useful is the concentration: when one component takes 50 per cent of everything filed on a car, the pattern is doing more than chance.
| Component | Complaints | Share |
|---|---|---|
| AIR BAGS | 78 | 50% |
| UNKNOWN OR OTHER | 21 | 13% |
| SERVICE BRAKES | 16 | 10% |
| POWER TRAIN | 12 | 8% |
| FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE | 10 | 6% |
| ELECTRICAL SYSTEM | 8 | 5% |
Against the 2020 car, this model year has drawn 43 per cent fewer complaints (157 against 274). The 2020 car was led by its electrical system instead, so the pattern shifted between the two years.
Of those complaints, 21 describe a crash and 2 describe a fire. Filers reported 16 injuries. One complaint reports a death.
Recalls on the 2021 Toyota Camry
A recall means the manufacturer or the regulator found a safety defect, and the repair is free at a franchised dealer however old the car is. There is one recall on this model year. Your own car may be covered by some, all or none of them, so check the VIN rather than the model.
Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2020-2021 Avalon, Avalon Hybrid, Corolla, Highlander, Highlander Hybrid, RAV4, RAV4 Hybrid, Lexus ES350, Lexus RX350, Lexus RX450H, 2021 Sienna Hybrid, Lexus ES250, 2020-2022 Camry, Camry Hybrid, and ES300H vehicles. A short circuit may develop in the Occupant Classification System (OCS) sensor, preventing the front passenger air bag from deploying.
The risk. An air bag that does not deploy during a crash increases the risk of injury.
The fix. Dealers will inspect and replace the sensor as necessary, free of charge. Interim letters notifying owners of the safety risk were mailed in February 2024. Some final remedy owner letters were mailed October 31, 2024. Letters will continue to be mailed in phases through January 2026. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's number for this recall is 23TB15/23TA15 Lexus 23LB03/23LA03.
In owners own words
These are complaints filed about the airbags, quoted as written. They are one persons account rather than a diagnosis, and they are here because a symptom described by a driver is easier to recognise than a component name.
THIS FIRST PORTION OF THE DESCRIPTION IF AN ENGLISH TRANSLATION FROM THE LATTER PART, WHICH WAS RECEIVED IN SPANISH. Complaint to NHTSA – Unresolved Recall on 2021 Toyota Camry I own a used 2021 Toyota Camry purchased from an authorized Toyota dealer. After purchase, I discovered that the vehicle has an open recall related to the airbag system. According to information from NHTSA, there is currently no solution available from the manufacturer. My concern is twofold: 1. The vehicle makes a constant daily noise, apparently related to the problem reported in the recall, which increases my dis
I own a 2021 Toyota Camry XSE (VIN: [XXX] ) with a malfunction in the SRS airbag system related to the front passenger seat frame Occupant Classification System (OCS) sensor. The airbag warning light remains on, and diagnostics indicate a failure in the OCS sensor that could prevent the passenger airbag from deploying correctly, or could deploy it at the wrong time during a collision. I contacted Toyota for assistance, but they declined to cover the repair, stating the vehicle is out of warranty and not covered under any current recall or extended warranty. However, this is a critical safety i
To the best of my knowledge the following information is true. The car accident was on June 1, 2022. My vehicle is at the Collision repair shop. Will provide their phone # upon request. It would be great if the black box was checked regarding brake assist and other safety features. You have my permission to examine car, take and or check black box. You can take pictures or video as needed. I always keep the brake assist on. I do not depend on brake assist. The posted speed limit is 45 mph. I usually set my cruise control for the posted speed limit. I looked down briefly and next thing

How other model years compare
The same nameplate across the years we hold. Complaint counts fall naturally for newer cars because fewer of them have been on the road for long, so read the column as a rough signal rather than a ranking. In this set the 2018 Toyota Camry has drawn the most complaints and the 2017 Toyota Camry the fewest.
What to check on the airbags and restraints
Airbag reports are mostly about the warning light staying on, the passenger seat deciding nobody is sitting in it, or a bag that did not deploy in a crash. The light is the part owners see. The sensor behind it is the part that matters.
Buying a used 2021 Camry
Watch the airbag light at startup. It should come on, then go out. A light that never comes on at all is as much of a warning as one that stays lit, because it can mean the bulb was removed to hide a fault.
If you already own one
Treat this as urgent rather than cosmetic. A restraint fault does nothing at all until the one moment it matters, and the repair is sometimes covered by a recall. Check the VIN before paying anything.
- Watch the airbag light cycle on then off at startup.
- Check the VIN against open airbag recalls first.
- Test the passenger occupancy sensor with someone sitting there.
- Ask whether any restraint part has been replaced after a crash.
Where the 2021 Toyota Camry problem data comes from
Every figure on this page is counted from complaints and recalls published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, read October 12, 2026. Complaints are filed by owners and are not verified by the agency before publication. We count each complaint once per component it names, so a complaint naming two components appears in both rows.
