2017 Toyota Camry problems owners report most
2017 Toyota Camry problems are documented in public: owners have filed 148 complaints with NHTSA, the earliest in 2016 and the most recent in 2026. Sorting those by the component the filer named puts the something the filer did not categorise clearly first, at 31 of the 148 complaints, about a fifth of everything filed.
A complaint is not a repair bill and not a defect finding. It is one owner telling the regulator something went wrong. What makes the count useful is the concentration: when one component takes 21 per cent of everything filed on a car, the pattern is doing more than chance.
| Component | Complaints | Share |
|---|---|---|
| UNKNOWN OR OTHER | 31 | 21% |
| AIR BAGS | 24 | 16% |
| ELECTRICAL SYSTEM | 23 | 16% |
| SERVICE BRAKES | 21 | 14% |
| VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL | 19 | 13% |
| STEERING | 14 | 9% |
Against the 2016 car, this model year has drawn 22 per cent fewer complaints (148 against 189). Both years are led by the something the filer did not categorise, so this is a fault that carried over rather than one introduced with the 2017 car.
Of those complaints, 28 describe a crash and 5 describe a fire. Filers reported 29 injuries.
Recalls on the 2017 Toyota Camry
A recall means the manufacturer or the regulator found a safety defect, and the repair is free at a franchised dealer however old the car is. There are 3 recalls on this model year. Your own car may be covered by some, all or none of them, so check the VIN rather than the model.
Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC (SET) is recalling certain 2017-2019 Toyota Camry, Corolla, Rav4, Sienna, and Yaris iA vehicles equipped with factory-installed floor mats. The load carrying capacity modification label may be incorrect. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 110, "Tire Selection and Rims."
The risk. An incorrect label may lead to unintentionally overloading the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
The fix. SET will notify owners and provide a corrected label for placement over the inaccurate label, free of charge. The recall began August 23, 2019. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371. SET's number for this recall is SET19A.
Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2016 Avalon, and 2017 Camry vehicles manufactured August 3, 2016, to September 12, 2016. The front passenger knee air bag module may have been attached to the lower instrument panel with incorrect fasteners.
The risk. If the air bag was installed with incorrect fasteners, the fasteners may become loose over time, affecting the air bag deployment and increasing the risk of injury.
The fix. Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the fasteners, and if necessary, replace the instrument panel brace and body bracket and reattach the air bag assembly, free of charge. The recall began on February 8, 2017. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's number for this recall is G05.
Gulf States Toyota, Inc. (Gulf States) is recalling certain 2017 4Runner , 86, Avalon, Camry, Camry Hybrid, Corolla, Corolla iM, Highlander, Highlander Hybrid, Prius, Prius C, RAV4, RAV4 Hybrid, Sienna and Yaris vehicles. The spare tire air pressure was not adjusted to the proper pressure as stated on the Tire Pressure Label.
The risk. A spare tire that is not inflated to the proper value may not perform as intended, increasing the risk of a crash.
The fix. Gulf States will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the spare tires, adjusting their pressure as necessary, free of charge. The recall began June 15, 2017. Owners may contact Gulf States customer service at 1-800-444-1074. Toyota's number for this recall is 17R2.
In owners own words
These are complaints filed about the something the filer did not categorise, quoted as written. They are one persons account rather than a diagnosis, and they are here because a symptom described by a driver is easier to recognise than a component name.
What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request The odometer system of the vehicle has malfunctioned. The odometer reading, which displayed 118,204 miles at the time of purchase, has stopped working entirely and does not record additional mileage. Evidence suggests that the odometer was tampered with or manipulated prior to the sale, as a vehicle history report reveals the car had accumulated 290000 miles before the purchase. The vehicle and odometer are available for inspection upon request. How was your safety or the safety of others put at
WHILE DRIVING ON HIGHWAY 280 SOUTHBOUND AT ROUGHLY 65 MPH IN FRIDAY EVENING TRAFFIC, THE MOONROOF ON MY 2017 CAMRY EXPLODED SPONTANEOUSLY. IT WAS SO LOUD, I THOUGHT I HAD BEEN SHOT AT. LUCKILY, THE COVER WAS CLOSED OR GLASS WOULD HAVE BEEN EVERYWHERE IN THE CAR'S INTERIOR. THE GLASS HAD EXPLODED OUTWARD AS THERE WAS NO DAMAGE TO THE SLIDING COVER AT ALL. I CALLED MY INSURANCE COMPANY BUT WAS UNABLE TO GET INTO A SHOP AS IT WAS AFTER 5 PM. THE MOONROOF RAILS HAD TO BE REPLACED WHEN I INITIALLY BOUGHT THE CAR LAST YEAR AND SO I THOUGHT THE DEALER WOULD HAVE THE REPAIR UNDER WARRANTEE. I TOOK IT
purchased a 2017 Toyota Camry from CarMax in Ontario, CA, with a 12,000 down payment. I chose this vehicle for its reliability and fuel efficiency. After the first week, I noticed poor gas mileage—only 17 mpg. CarMax checked it but found no issues. On September 25th, 2024, I purchased another 2017 Camry with 81,000 miles. After a short test drive, I noted squeaky brakes, a burned-out headlight, and a small windshield chip. CarMax replaced the bulb and promised to address the brakes and chip. However, a few months later, I saw the mileage increasing faster than I was driving, despite maintenanc

How other model years compare
The same nameplate across the years we hold. Complaint counts fall naturally for newer cars because fewer of them have been on the road for long, so read the column as a rough signal rather than a ranking. In this set the 2018 Toyota Camry has drawn the most complaints and the 2017 Toyota Camry the fewest.
How to use this before you buy or repair
The reports do not gather around one obvious symptom, so read a handful of the complaints above and see which descriptions match what your car is doing.
Buying a used 2017 Camry
Bring the complaint list to the inspection and ask the mechanic to check the components named most, rather than running a general once over.
If you already own one
Check your VIN for open recalls first. A recall repair costs nothing whatever the age or mileage of the car.
- Check the VIN for open recalls, not the model year.
- Ask the inspecting mechanic about the components named above.
- Get the part number before comparing retailer prices.
- Keep parts and labour as separate lines in any quote.
Where the 2017 Toyota Camry problem data comes from
Every figure on this page is counted from complaints and recalls published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, read October 12, 2026. Complaints are filed by owners and are not verified by the agency before publication. We count each complaint once per component it names, so a complaint naming two components appears in both rows.
