2021 Toyota Corolla problems owners report most

2021 Toyota Corolla problems are documented in public: owners have filed 186 complaints with NHTSA, the earliest in 2020 and the most recent in 2026. Sorting those by the component the filer named puts the airbags clearly first, at 52 of the 186 complaints, about a quarter of everything filed.

A complaint is not a repair bill and not a defect finding. It is one owner telling the regulator something went wrong. What makes the count useful is the concentration: when one component takes 28 per cent of everything filed on a car, the pattern is doing more than chance.

Against the 2020 car, this model year has drawn 40 per cent fewer complaints (186 against 311). The 2020 car was led by its engine instead, so the pattern shifted between the two years.

Of those complaints, 18 describe a crash and 2 describe a fire. Filers reported 13 injuries.

Recalls on the 2021 Toyota Corolla

A recall means the manufacturer or the regulator found a safety defect, and the repair is free at a franchised dealer however old the car is. There is one recall on this model year. Your own car may be covered by some, all or none of them, so check the VIN rather than the model.

AIR BAGS:SENSOR:OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION23V865000 · reported 20/12/2023

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2020-2021 Avalon, Avalon Hybrid, Corolla, Highlander, Highlander Hybrid, RAV4, RAV4 Hybrid, Lexus ES350, Lexus RX350, Lexus RX450H, 2021 Sienna Hybrid, Lexus ES250, 2020-2022 Camry, Camry Hybrid, and ES300H vehicles. A short circuit may develop in the Occupant Classification System (OCS) sensor, preventing the front passenger air bag from deploying.

The risk. An air bag that does not deploy during a crash increases the risk of injury.

The fix. Dealers will inspect and replace the sensor as necessary, free of charge. Interim letters notifying owners of the safety risk were mailed in February 2024. Some final remedy owner letters were mailed October 31, 2024. Letters will continue to be mailed in phases through January 2026. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's number for this recall is 23TB15/23TA15 Lexus 23LB03/23LA03.

In owners own words

These are complaints filed about the airbags, quoted as written. They are one persons account rather than a diagnosis, and they are here because a symptom described by a driver is easier to recognise than a component name.

Dear NHTSA Vehicle Safety Team, I am writing to report a serious and unresolved safety issue regarding the passenger-side airbag recall on my 2020 Toyota [Model], VIN: [Your VIN]. This recall was issued on December 20, 2023, and as of today, Toyota has not provided a remedy or timeline for repair. I have contacted Toyota dealerships in Norwalk and Anaheim, both of which advised me not to bring the car in, stating that no fix is currently available. I was recently offered a rental car, but only if I surrender my vehicle to the dealership — something I am not comfortable doing, as I wish to re

My vehicle was backed into while ì was inside of it in a parking lot. Due to my horn failing., I was unable to alert the other driver to see me. The clock spring is what failed the first time at 95k they replaced it. I'm now at 147k and it failed again . Now I'm discovering that if it does not work, there's an electrical circuit failure and that the airbag will not deploy if I get in an accident. This is a serious safety issue and I feel Toyota should be responsible for it for the life of the vehicle . A horn should never go out. Especially if it not working will keep my air bag from funct

I am writing to formally file a complaint regarding the ongoing issues related to safety recall 23TA15 for my 2021 Toyota Corolla LE. The recall, issued in December 2023, involves a defect in the Occupant Classification System (OCS) sensors in the front passenger seat, which may have been improperly manufactured. Unfortunately, Toyota has failed to address this recall in a timely manner, significantly impacting my ability to use my vehicle safely and as intended. My local dealership has confirmed that my car is affected by this recall and that the OCS sensor is not functioning. However, despi

How other model years compare

The same nameplate across the years we hold. Complaint counts fall naturally for newer cars because fewer of them have been on the road for long, so read the column as a rough signal rather than a ranking. In this set the 2020 Toyota Corolla has drawn the most complaints and the 2018 Toyota Corolla the fewest.

What to check on the airbags and restraints

Airbag reports are mostly about the warning light staying on, the passenger seat deciding nobody is sitting in it, or a bag that did not deploy in a crash. The light is the part owners see. The sensor behind it is the part that matters.

Buying a used 2021 Corolla

Watch the airbag light at startup. It should come on, then go out. A light that never comes on at all is as much of a warning as one that stays lit, because it can mean the bulb was removed to hide a fault.

If you already own one

Treat this as urgent rather than cosmetic. A restraint fault does nothing at all until the one moment it matters, and the repair is sometimes covered by a recall. Check the VIN before paying anything.

  • Watch the airbag light cycle on then off at startup.
  • Check the VIN against open airbag recalls first.
  • Test the passenger occupancy sensor with someone sitting there.
  • Ask whether any restraint part has been replaced after a crash.

Where the 2021 Toyota Corolla problem data comes from

Every figure on this page is counted from complaints and recalls published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, read October 12, 2026. Complaints are filed by owners and are not verified by the agency before publication. We count each complaint once per component it names, so a complaint naming two components appears in both rows.
