2018 Nissan Rogue problems owners report most
2018 Nissan Rogue problems are documented in public: owners have filed 609 complaints with NHTSA, the earliest in 2018 and the most recent in 2025. Sorting those by the component the filer named puts the brakes clearly first, at 253 of the 609 complaints, two of every five filed.
A complaint is not a repair bill and not a defect finding. It is one owner telling the regulator something went wrong. What makes the count useful is the concentration: when one component takes 42 per cent of everything filed on a car, the pattern is doing more than chance.
| Component | Complaints | Share |
|---|---|---|
| SERVICE BRAKES | 253 | 42% |
| FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE | 161 | 26% |
| UNKNOWN OR OTHER | 127 | 21% |
| ELECTRICAL SYSTEM | 81 | 13% |
| ENGINE | 52 | 9% |
| VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL | 34 | 6% |
Against the 2017 car, this model year has drawn 2 per cent more complaints (609 against 599). The 2017 car was led by its something the filer did not categorise instead, so the pattern shifted between the two years.
Of those complaints, 32 describe a crash and 1 describes a fire. Filers reported 45 injuries.
Recalls on the 2018 Nissan Rogue
A recall means the manufacturer or the regulator found a safety defect, and the repair is free at a franchised dealer however old the car is. There are 3 recalls on this model year. Your own car may be covered by some, all or none of them, so check the VIN rather than the model.
Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2018-2019 Nissan Altima, Armada, Frontier, Kicks, Leaf, Maxima, Murano, NV, NV200, Pathfinder, Rogue, Rogue Sport, Sentra, Titan, Titan Diesel, Versa Note and Versa Sedan vehicles, as well as Infiniti Q50, Q60, QX30 and QX80 vehicles. Additionally included are 2019 Nissan GT-R and Taxi and Infiniti QX50, QX60, Q70, Q70L vehicles. The back-up camera and display settings can be adjusted such that the rear view image is no longer visible and the system will retain that setting the next time the vehicle is placed in reverse. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rear Visibility."
The risk. The lack of an image in the back-up camera display increases the risk of a crash.
The fix. Nissan will notify owners in phases, having dealers update the back-up camera settings software, free of charge. The recall began November 11, 2019 and all affected VINs should be activated. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669 or INFINITI customer service at 1-800-662-6200.
Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2017-2019 Rogue Hybrid vehicles. Contact with the Electronic Control Module (ECM) bracket may damage the engine harness, causing a blown fuse.
The risk. A blown fuse may cause an engine stall, increasing the risk of a crash.
The fix. Dealers will install a harness protector cover, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed December 16, 2021. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan's number for this recall is R21B6.
Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2014-2020 Rogue and 2017-2022 Rogue Sport vehicles equipped with a jackknife style ignition key. The jackknife key may collapse into a folded position while driving.
The risk. Driver contact with a key in the collapsed position could inadvertently shut off the vehicle while driving, increasing the risk of a crash. Additionally, if the vehicle shuts off while driving, the air bags may not deploy in a crash as intended, increasing the risk of injury.
The fix. Dealers will insert a spacer into the key slot of the jackknife key, free of charge. Interim notification letters notifying owners of the safety risk were mailed March 29, 2023. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed August 30, 2023. Owners may contact Nissan's customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan's number for this recall is R22C5.
In owners own words
These are complaints filed about the brakes, quoted as written. They are one persons account rather than a diagnosis, and they are here because a symptom described by a driver is easier to recognise than a component name.
In sum, on 7/22/2020, my vehicle was traveling approximately 55mph southbound Interstate 90/94 at Harrison when the forward collision warning activated, and emergency braking occurred. Vehicle speed was reduced to 25mph for several seconds, then alert disengaged. There were no vehicles or obstacles immediately in front of my vehicle, however there were several vehicles behind me and within the lanes on either side of me. The emergency breaking caused my seatbelt to lock, and distract me with auditory and visual alerts, and cause the vehicles behind me to slam on their breaks. This incident cou
On Friday April 21, 2023 I was operating my vehicle with my toddler inside going about 30 miles per hour when suddenly out of no where with No Warning my vehicle beeped rapidly 5 times and as it was beeping it intensely braked itself and/or slowed down immediately while at a speed of about 30 miles per hour. It was as if my car was getting pulled backwards and immediately slowing down I had no control of my vehicle. I was driving 30 miles per hour but I had No Control Of my vehicle, Not until the vehicle was finished pulling all the way back and slowing down to about 5-10 miles per hour from 3
I WAS DRIVING AROUND 11AM USING LOCAL ROADS. I HAD BEEN DRIVING ABOUT 5 MINUTES WHEN I PULLED UP TO A STOP SIGN. IT WAS A CLEAR DAY, LIGHT TRAFFIC, DRY PAVEMENT, NO LEAVES OR OTHER ROAD DEBRIS. AS I PULLED AWAY FROM THE STOP SIGN, WITHIN 20 FEET, THE CAR SUDDENLY STARTED SHAKING AND STOPPING. IT MADE AN INCREDIBLY LOUD NOISE. I IMMEDIATELY PULLED OVER THE SHOULDER. THERE WERE NO MESSAGES ON THE DASH OR BEHIND THE STEERING WHEEL. AFTER SITTING THERE A FEW MINUTES, I PROCEEDED HOME WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT. LATER THAT DAY, I DROPPED THE CAR OFF AT THE CAR DEALER TO CHECK INTO THIS PROBLE
ON APRIL 11, 2018, I WAS DRIVING MY BRAND NEW 2018 NISSAN ROGUE. I HAD JUST GOTTEN OFF THE HIGHWAY, AND WAS DRIVING STRAIGHT ALONG A CITY STREET WHEN SUDDENLY THE BRAKES SLAMMED ON, THRUSTING ME FORWARD AND GIVING ME A NEAR HEART ATTACK. I COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED OR SERIOUSLY INJURED, HAD THIS HAPPENED UNDER DIFFERENT CIRCUMSTANCES. THE EMERGENCY NOTICE ON THE DASHBOARD READ "MALFUNCTION! - SEE DRIVER MANUAL." I HAD THE FORESIGHT TO TAKE PICTURES OF THE DASHBOARD, WHICH I AM INCLUDING IN THIS COMPLAINT. THE ICON WAS THAT OF TWO CARS COLLIDING. THERE HAD BEEN NO CAR IN FRONT OF ME AND NOTHING TO
ON OCT 24TH I WAS ON MY WAY TO DRIVE MY AUTISTIC SON TO HIS DAY PROGRAM WHICH IS LESS THEN A MILE AWAY. AS I WAS DRIVING THE EMERGENCY BRAKE CAME ON AND PULLING ME TO A STOP, THEN I PROCEEDED TO PULL OVER AFTER BEING SHAKEN UP ALONG WITH MY SON. THEN CONTINUE TO TRY AGAIN. I CALLED NISSAN AND THEY TOLD ME I CAN BRING THE CAR IN THE NEXT DAY. I DID AND THAT AFTERNOON THEY INFORMED ME THEY FIXED THE SENSOR AND EVERYTHING IS FINE NOW. ON NOV 7TH I WAS DRIVING ON THE SERVICE ROAD WITH IS ALONG SIDE THE HIGHWAY GOING TO LUNCH WITH MY SON AND HIS RESPITE WORKER AND AGAIN THE EMERGENCY BRAKE PULLED
The first time I was just pulling out of my driveway and my car, made this grinding noise and forced to stop and the braking system light came on. The second time we were going 30 to 45 miles an hour and the same thing happened made that grinding noise came to a stop that time was definitely more harder because we’re going faster. I brought this to the attention of Nissan in Bayshore, and supposedly they checked a couple of things and said nope everything’s fine and like I said that was the first time and the second time they said the same exact thing that there could be some thing that trigg

How other model years compare
The same nameplate across the years we hold. Complaint counts fall naturally for newer cars because fewer of them have been on the road for long, so read the column as a rough signal rather than a ranking. In this set the 2018 Nissan Rogue has drawn the most complaints and the 2020 Nissan Rogue the fewest.
What to check on the brakes
Brake reports describe a pedal that goes soft or sinks, longer stopping distances, and a judder through the pedal under firm braking. Some describe the car braking by itself where an automatic system is fitted.
Buying a used 2018 Rogue
Brake hard from speed on an empty road. Pads and discs are a normal wear item and cheap to replace, so a judder is not a reason to walk away. A pedal that sinks under steady pressure is a different matter.
If you already own one
Have the fluid tested, not just the pads. Brake fluid absorbs water as it ages and a soft pedal is more often old fluid than a failed part. A fluid change costs far less than a caliper.
- Brake firmly from speed to feel for judder or a sinking pedal.
- Have the brake fluid moisture content tested.
- Check pad and disc thickness against the service limit, not by eye.
- Ask for a quote separating pads, discs, fluid and labour.
Where the 2018 Nissan Rogue problem data comes from
Every figure on this page is counted from complaints and recalls published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, read October 12, 2026. Complaints are filed by owners and are not verified by the agency before publication. We count each complaint once per component it names, so a complaint naming two components appears in both rows.
